A Pastiche of Good Intentions

Lori Larusso is a painter working in an idiosyncratic style that borrows from traditional sign painting, illustration, and food photography. A Pastiche of Good Intentions, originally shown in the 2019 KMAC Triennial, was one of her largest site-specific projects to date. Much of Larusso's work stems from her investigations into our relationship with food, including the consumption of food imagery on various digital platforms. Instead of focusing on one central message, she mirrors our complicated values surrounding food with a dense collage of images that draw both from our current moment as well as from the extravagant food depictions found in Dutch still life paintings from the 17th century. These old master works were likewise void of specific narrative and were rather intended to convey a field of symbols while also embodying the wealth and opulence of the upper class. The modern editorialization of food in gourmet magazines and television shows is referenced in Larusso's bright color palette, mimicking a glossy magazine spread. She further considers how the influence of consumer capitalism adversely affects our attitudes towards food consumption and how this relates to issues surrounding food safety and food literacy in an era defined by fewer resources due to widening economic and class disparity.

P-22 Pool Party

P-22 Pool Party is a celebration of contrasts—between the wild and the sophisticated, the solitary and the social, the enduring and the ephemeral. This exhibit reflects on the dynamic interplay between nature and human design, and takes its name from an imagined pool party hosted by P-22.

P-22, the mountain lion who was documented living in Griffith Park from 2012-2022, survived crossing two major Los Angeles freeways. The nine square miles he had access to were too small for a cat of his size and he never found a mate, regardless, he survived in his suburban environment for at least a decade. His presence is remembered as a symbol of both shifting relationships between humans and animals, and a reminder of imminent environmental concerns.

Coffee Service

Larusso's still-life arrangements combine humor and critique. At once playful and provocative, the detailed domesticity she depicts examines conventional gender roles and labor with subtle wit: the lipstick on the coffee cup in Coffee Service 1 (2020) indicates that whoever served and consumed the refreshment is a woman. The cup itself appears to be Styrofoam, a humble material that contrasts sharply with the gleaming silver of the tray, invoking issues of class. Partaking in this elaborate ritual is reserved for the privileged few: as art historian Miriam Kienle observes, "these paintings register this intense longing to believe in meritocracy and upward mobility, as well as the sense of resignation and exhaustion indicative of the new economy that thwarts that promise."

Eating Animals

In making her work, Lori Larusso considers how the consumption of images in magazine spreads and in Instagram feeds inundate and indoctrinate, forcing us to desire a kind of perfection in our homes, both in terms of the physical space and the lives we live within their walls. She is quick to note how all of these images are manipulated and meant to manipulate us; magazine spreads are entirely staged and Instagram posts are almost always arranged and filtered to give us the best impression of a space, not the lived reality. In her series, Eating Animals, Larusso considers the manipulation of food for this kind of photography by creating the shapes of different animals out of various foodstuffs, items that are more visually pleasing than edible. In so doing, Larusso comments on the kind of vicarious lives we live through the consumption of media that focuses more on the appearance of things than their use.

I Like Your Pictures and I Like You is a series of 12 x 12” still life paintings utilizing borrowed material from social media, presenting democratized content as meaningful subject matter worthy of expressive regurgitation. I appropriate, reshape, and imagine fragments of images and text from posts to convey a (post-?) pandemic social life that entails communicating with others virtually just as often as physically, usually through vague gestures, coded language, and simulacra. These works approach a variety of topics, including questions around the ownership and authorship of image and text in the digital sphere, and the blurring of lines between heart-felt genuine expression and advertising that is ubiquitous in 2023.

Curfew

The title of the painting, Curfew refers to a restriction put in place to exert control, restrict movement, and protect humans from an environment (or an environment from humans). My first experience with a curfew was imposed by my mom, who, in the 1990s, would police her three teenage daughters’ nighttime whereabouts and enforce curfew, usually sitting on the couch, looking displeased, when any of us arrived home minutes before 9pm on a school night (midnight on weekends). While domestic furniture naturally has some corporeal associations (legs, arms, feet), the particular couch represented here signals a bodily and decorative, possibly feminine, impression with a curvy shape, carved wood, and tufted pink upholstery. The conflict here is that the couch itself has been scandalized—visually broken and presumably removed from the safety of the home. The decorative sleeping sunshine pillow hints at the dangers (perceived or actual) of being out past one’s bedtime, and is a cheeky reference to an impending loss of innocence.

Lori Larusso examines how media images prescribe a sort of unattainable domestic perfection to women, using her paintings to subvert the fiction of an effortlessly well-kept home. Creating vibrant, stylized, and highly composed middle-class domestic spaces in works like If you can Bake a Cake, you can Make a Bomb and If you can Mop a Floor, you can participate in a Sympathetic Strike, Larusso’s houses are overwhelmed with mess, both literally and figuratively, directly challenging the pristine and perfect homes that are prominently featured in women’s magazines and that clutter our Instagram feeds. Not only do her images undermine this ideal of effortless domestic perfection by revealing the actual labor involved in maintaining these spaces, the titles of the works make specific reference to applying the very same skills involved in this form of upkeep to revolutionary action.

It's Not My Birthday

The title of the series of works, “It’s Not My Birthday, That’s Not My Cake” points to the generic aspect of remembered experiences. These paintings isolate the cake image, sometimes including serving utensils but no personalized information, making the specialness of an individual’s own birthday cake mainstreamed. The cakes appear to be carefully prepared and decorated; everything is nice, but not too nice. This group of works is not attempting to dismantle nostalgia, but point to the complexity of individual situations.

Popular culture, and especially history, does not often account for multiple points of view. What we hear or see on the news is the result of a particular agenda, without regard to the quieter voices present. Those who are most often not heard are not part of the dominant power class.

The Birthday Party as a remembered or fantasized experience is a middle-class one. The idea of celebrating each year one survives seems to be very humanistic, but also gives way to the complete commercialization of every single aspect of contemporary society.

Kitchen Sink Still Life

Seeking connection is fundamental to the human condition. One way this manifests is through our relationships to the objects in our environments and the regular tools used to engage in daily domestic tasks. The ritual and practice of handling these objects—through utility, and cleaning, and organizing—is reflected and magnified though the thoughtful and laborious physical and visual act intrinsic to representational painting. Though this process, I engage in a deep exploration of the relationship between owner and object, the possessor and the possessed. With this as my point of entry, I am interested in exploring the intersection of image, totem, and tangibility.

Before moving from Rhode Island to Kentucky a decade ago I decided to assimilate by taking up bourbon drinking and reading Flannery O’Connor. While I haven’t taken to painting images of horses, it could be said that my time in Kentucky has come full circle when I began a series of Bourbon Cocktail paintings. These works applaud the pure beauty and artistry of carefully prepared cocktails, serving as a reminder of celebration, indulgence, and locale.

Afterparty

The Afterparty series evolved out of a body of work that presents images of beautifully perfect, whole (uneaten) birthday cakes at the moment after the candles have been blown out but before the cake has been cut. While there is something occasionally tragic or ironic about representations of perfection, I believe the Afterparty paintings encompass something more.

These works maintain a sliver of the perfection inherent in a whole, beautifully prepared cake while refusing the viewer an obvious image of perfection; rather these pieces suggest a more direct representation of a cake (as in, half-eaten; cakes are meant to be eaten) while they allude to notions of excess and post-party sentiment.

Shapes

This series explores the unavoidable contradictions that exist in our personal (and collective) systems of belief, by pointing to the complexity of our individual situations and the structures that trap us when we try to alter those beliefs. While based in the experience of daily interaction with our immediate surroundings, these pieces examine looming traditional and cultural expectations that resist forces of change while also promising something better.

My interest in representations of domestic spaces lies in the comfort that is implied, and the how this notion of comfort reduces the complexity that is present in the way these material forms were produced and came to occupy the domestic space. The domestic sphere is a private place, but we are constantly seeing curated snapshots of domestic life via facebook, instagram, blogs, etc. This is no different than the 1950s depictions of women happily slaving away at domestic chores. These new blogs have replaced the old Better Homes and Gardens, Family Circle, and Woman’s Day magazines. Our “retro” pasts have become some women’s current reality. Our home lives are never that simple or neat, they cannot be summed up in an image of a freshly baked pie, images of toddlers in knitted sweaters and homemade haircuts, or even in a picture of a pile of dirty laundry and the mess that the new puppy made. These images only begin to present a version of what is really going on inside the home.
